  1. On "Cockahoop", Matthews has found a comfortable place to make her bed. Her warm and lilting voice wraps around the country/rock/folk songs with charming ability. Gone are the grating, fire-eaten songs spat out with venom. One definatly gets the feeling that Matthews was never really comfortable in her role of rock goddess/5(22).

  2. She's now a Nashville cowgirl, but don't assume Cockahoop is a country album. Producer Bucky Baxter (Steve Earle, Ryan Adams, Bob Dylan) doesn't let Matthews fall into any one genre. She's such a vocal eccentric, she doesn't belong anywhere, but that's the beauty of her talent.8/

When Catatonia split in amidst rehab, relationship breakdowns and the fin de siecle feeling that swamped Britpop, anyone who’d heard their lead singer’s incredibly distinctive voice must have been aware that they’d not heard the last of it. Cerys Matthews could do things with her voice that rendered description ineffectual and a trite.

  9. Cerys Matthews Cockahoop Review. Album. Released and clearly enjoying the three-sheets-to-the-wind bawl of "La Bague". The sound of Cockahoop no doubt owes much to Bob Dylan steel.
